Tsunami Drill

Port Renfrew was th efirst Island Community to test their new sunami alarms.
July 19th 2006 at 6pm, the Fire Dept. activated 2 new alarms situated at opposit ends of town. These alarms are triggered either manually or by Langford when there is the threat of a large wave hitting our tiny town.
Next up: Tsunami signage will be placed along highway 14 to warn visitors that they are entering a "Tsunami Zone".

Sumo Wrestling in Port Renfrew

One of the featured activities at this year's event will be the Sumo Suits from Fun-Time Inflatables in Victoria, B.C.
To wrestling with your pals it will take 4 tickets (Tix are sold for the price of: 2 for $2- or 5 for $4-)
You must also be 13 years +

Anyone who knows us here or more specifally, Gill knows that it has been her goal for a long time to get these suits for Port Renfrew Day, so come out and enjoy them!
They are available from 11:30 to 2:30

Annual Polar Bear Swim

The annual New Year's Day polar bear swim is all set to take place once again!
The PRHSSS will provide hot chocolate and the PRVFD will take donations for their "Jaws of Life" fund in exchange for the fun of watching Fire Chief Dan Tennant plunge into the icy Pacific Ocean.
We are also collecting canned and non-perishable goods for the Sooke Transition House Society and you can bring your donations there or to the Rec. Center.

Local surf hero wins another one!
Our very own Leah Oke spent last weekend in Tofino, B.C. winning...(what else?) First Place!
The photo above (Curtesy of coastalbc.com) is actually the winning wave.
Leah was competing in Volcom's first ever Canadian competion at Chesterman Beach.
This win means that Leah can now go on to compete in California. No date has been announced but check back, when we know, you'll know.

Continuing from previous post.

"Back then Made in Japan meant cheap chinaware and the expression making out referred to how you did on your exam. Pizzas and McDonald's and instant coffees were unheard of. We shopped at the five and ten-cent stores where you actually bought things for five and ten-cents. Ice cream cones were a nickel and if you wanted a double dip it was a dime. For a nickel you could ride a streetcar, make a phone call, buy a coffee or a pepsi, or get enough stamps to mail a letter and two postcards. You could buy a Chevy Coupe for $1000.00 - but who could afford one? A pity too because gas was only 11 cents a gallon.
"In our day grass was mowed. Coke was a cold drink, and pot was something you cooked in. Rock music was grandma's lullaby and aids were helpers in the principal's office. We were certainly not before the difference between the sexes was discovered, but we were surely before the sex change. We made do with what we had. We were also the last generation that was so dumb to think that you had to be married to have a baby"

No wonder we are so confused and there's such a generation gar. But, we survived!

This letter was cut-out of a newspaper with a weekly coloum entitled "Growing Older".

I'm sending you some words of wisdom. The following takes a look at the plight of those of us who were born befor 1945. I don't know who wrote it but whomever did certainly has a lot of insight.
Entitled For thoses who were born befor 1945 it reads;

"We are survivors!!!! Consider the changes we have witnessed!!" We were born before television, before polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, plastic, contact lenses, frisbees, and the pill. We were before credit cards, split levels, split atoms, laser beams, microwaves, and ballpoint pens. Before pantyhose, dishwashers, clothes dryers, electric blankets, air conditioners, drip dry clothes, and befor man walked on the moon.
"We got married first then lived together. How quaint can we be!! In out time, closets were for clothes, not for coming out of. Bunnies were small rabbits not volkwagons. Designer jeans were scheming girls named Jean, and having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with our cousins.
"We thought fast food was what you did during lent and outer space was back of the Riviera Theatre. We were before househusbands, gay rights, computer dating, duel careers. And computer marriages. We were before daycare centers, group therapy, nursing homes. We never heard of FM radio, tape decks, electronic typewriters, artificial hearts, word processors, yogurt, and guys wearing earrings. For us time sharing meant time spent together, not condominiums. A chip was a piece of wood. Hardware meant hardware and software wasn't even a word.

Elk

This is a story of our local Roosevelt Elk Transplant

This story begins on January 17th 1993, when the Elk were released near the farms on Crompton’s meadows off the Harris Creek Mainline. Four of the females transplanted were radio-collared to determine areas of use and to aid in locating the animals during follow-up research; signs were up saying “Elk hunting is not permitted in this area”. There were a total of 16 cows & calf’s released in the transplant operation and within the next few weeks bull Elk were spotted in numerous locations on the outskirts of Port Renfrew. Bull Elk in the rutting season can be very dangerous. There have been several occasions where people have been charged by these animals. Luckily, no one has been hurt as yet. They like to hang out in the school ball field at night. You can see evidence of their visits everywhere.

John James Audubon wrote the following poem in the early 18oo’s. Although this poem is about Elk on the Missouri River it could quite easily fit into our San Juan River Valley and the hundreds of Elk that inhabit our valleys and mountaintops.

Observe the splendid buck as he walks lightly, proudly, and gracefully along. It is the season of love:
His head is raised above the willows bordering the large sand - bar on the shores of the Missouri… His neck is arched… Every vein is distended. He looks around and sniffs the morning air with dilated nostrils,
He stamps the earth and utters a shrill cry somewhat like the noise of the loon. When he discovers a group of females he raises his head, inclines it backwards, and giving another trumpet – like whistle, dashes off to meet them, making the willows and other small trees yield and crack as he rushes by. Finding a buck as large and brave as himself gallanting the fair objects of hi pursuit, his eyes fill with rage and jealousy, his teeth are fiercely champed together making a loud harsh noise, and his hair stands erect. With the points of his immense horns lowered like the lance of a doughty knight, he leaps toward his rival. A desperate battle ensues.
The combatants swaying backwards and forwards or in circles, withering as they endeavor to throw their opponent off the ground. At length our valorous Elk triumphs should there be any young Elks present during such a combat they generally run off.
The victorious buck leads the does to the sand – bars or willow – covered points along the river banks. After a certain period, however, he leaves them to other bucks, and towards late February his antlers drop off, his body is emancipated, and he retires to some secluded spot where he hopes no enemies will discover him, as he is no longer vigorous and bold, and would dread to encounter even a single wolf.

CRD Director Campaign

The Capitol Regional District is looking to elect a new director this month.
Erik Lund is running again and so is Brian Henson.
Mr. Henson will be here at the Rec. Center on Nov. 7th at 7 pm to speak to Port Renfrew citizens about his vision for the future.
As of this day we do not yet have a date for Mr. Lund's visit.

Teachers Strike

While the teachers are on strike, the Rec. Center is open to children from the community. Starting next week, we have Bruce & Angie from Stayaround, Play around and the Summer Program joining us. They will provide entertainment, and care for the kids in town. Call 647-0030 for more info. This starts on Monday, October 17th.

HALLOWEEN IN P.R.

Hooray its Halloween!
On Monday, October 31st we will be open (as usual) and any kids who want to trick or treat here are more than welcome! Come in costume for extra fun.

Also, in conjunction with the Port Renfrew volunteer fire dept. we are once again holding a pumpkin design workshop at the fire dept. We will be ready for action around 3 pm with a FREE hot dog bbq after care of the very generous local firemen. Look out for another haunted house to journey through...bigger and better this year!!

Parents, please accompany your children to the fire hall as we can always use the extra adult bodies!
Stay tuned for update on the halloween party here in town.....

Borrowing Movies

We, at the Rec. Centre would just like to remind everyone that the movie lending library is a service that we offer the entire community.
We are happy to do so, but it is very difficult to keep expanding the collection when someone fails to return movies. especially brand new films.
We are a non-profit organization so we depend on our donations and various concession items to generate income.

Often, these films belong to a staff member or a member of the community. They have been generously donated to us for the purpose of sharing them with everyone else. PLEASE RETURN YOUR MOVIES

literary lending library

HI, as many users of our facility already know, we have a video lending library and we are trying to establish a book library aswell.
We don't want to compete with the local branch of the Vancouver Island Library but we would like to offer an extension including child care books, poetry, youth and children and travel selections.
If this interests you come up and take a look or if you have any older books to donate, it would be much appreciated. The books we need are mostly children's titles and early child care.
I'd like to also mention the large selection of fictional books at the Port Renfrew General Store with the proceeds from those sale going directly to the KIDS FUND>

Fall in Port Renfrew

Well it is almost september.
Here at the Rec. Centre that means that we are getting ready to say goodbye to all of our summer staff and we wish them all the best in the coming months.
The plan here is to resume our winter activities such as the quilting group, regular yoga classes, movie nights and the occasional potluck dinner.
It is still a popular time for tourists to come to Port Renfrew so our Visitor Info centre will remain open until further notice.
The kids are going back to school so hopefully we will extend our hours of operation to include more evenings as we are quite popular with kids who enjoy using the internet at our facility.
